How It’s Scored
We’ve created a “busted bracket” formula. When one of your Final Four selections loses, you’ll accrue points. Here is our Heartbreak Index™
[The Reverse Of Your Team’s Seed] x [The Seed Of Your Opponent] x [The Margin of Defeat With 10+ being the lowest multiple (1), and 1 being the highest multiple (10)]
Here’s an example from Virginia’s historic and heartbreaking loss to UMBC in 2018:
As a #1 seed UVA’s reverse-value was worth 16. They lost to UMBC, a #16 seed, which is worth 16. And because it was a loss of 10 or more points it is only a multiple of 1.
16 x 16 x 1 = 256 points
To see the margin of defeat at work, here’s one more example. The 15th-seeded Lehigh Mountain Hawks upset the 2nd-seeded Duke Blue Devils in 2012 by five points. Here’s what that would have been worth in our contest:
15 (Duke’s reverse-value) x 15 (Lehigh’s seed) x 6 (margin of victory) = 1350 points
The winner of our main prize will have the highest point total according to our “busted bracket” formula.
The winner of the Fanatics gift card will be determined by the following formula:
1 point per correct Final Four Team, 3 points for the correct champion, and in the result of a tie, the tiebreaker will be the total points scored in the championship game.
